The International Sisterhood Alliance is committed to empowering under-served women with healthcare resources to improve their quality of life. We strive to provide health and wellness programs across the region. The effort will be a trans-Atlantic partnership between TISHA and the village community members.
Empowering women means taking proactive steps to ensure their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. When women are healthy, their families thrive!
Nimatu Bah Hughes is the founder of The International Sisterhood Alliance.
At an early age, tragedy struck Nima in her native country of Sierra Leone. Her mother, Aminata Barrie, passed away from a mysterious illness. Some people within the village attributed her demise to witchcraft, but a more plausible explanation was complications from an untreated medical condition.
Fast forward fifty years. Nima, now a United States citizen, went back to visit Sierra Leone and was stunned. Women still lacked access to basic medical care. No stethoscope. No thermometer. No antiseptic wipes and bandages. No finger pricks. No prenatal care. The inadequate status of women's health became her familiar talking point.
Aside from the annual donations of clothes and books, Nima took her philanthropy to the next level. She became an advocate for women's health. With her friends support, she established The International Sisterhood Alliance, a nonprofit organization committed to empowering women to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
Join Nima in her campaign to build women health centers in the villages of Sierra Leone! The site for the pilot center will be in her mother’s village of Sagalireh.
